Drummers Yard

Heritage Refurbishment of a 1938 Country House

Project Overview

Clarks Construction Ltd was appointed to deliver a sensitive yet substantial heritage refurbishment of Drummers Yard, an architecturally significant private country house in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, originally designed by architect John Cambell in 1938. Delivered under a Design and Build contract over a 40-week programme and completed in July 2022, the project demanded the highest levels of traditional craftsmanship and discreet modernisation in equal measure - a brief that drew on every dimension of our heritage construction expertise.

From the outset, the project was guided by a deep respect for the building's architectural heritage. Every intervention was carefully weighed against the original architect's intent, with our team working hand in hand with conservation specialists, the local authority, and the client's design team to ensure that the home's historical integrity was preserved at every stage. Compromise and intense collaboration were central to the project's success - a dialogue that shaped every decision from the earliest design proposals through to final finishes.

The works encompassed the full restoration of the main living areas, returning each principal room to its original grandeur whilst introducing the modern services and comforts expected of a contemporary family home. Marble and stone restoration formed a significant part of the programme, with careful cleaning and repair of the original stone arches and Lutyens-style detailing, alongside the installation of bespoke marble flooring and fireplace surrounds crafted to complement the proportions and character of the principal reception rooms.

Specialist finishes were applied throughout, including the painstaking restoration of hand-painted lime-based heritage paint applications and decorative ceiling treatments. Each surface was treated as an individual conservation task - from the reinstatement of damaged plasterwork using traditional lime mixes, to the careful stripping and refinishing of original timber joinery - ensuring that the home's period character was not merely retained but genuinely revived.

Flooring works saw the full restoration of the original timber floors, with sympathetic replacement carried out only where absolutely required and seamlessly blended with the existing boards. Underfloor heating was discreetly integrated beneath the restored surfaces, providing modern comfort without compromising the architectural fabric. The joinery and architectural features package included the repair and replacement of custom joinery throughout, from the arched windows and Juliet balconies to the period panelling that defines the home's principal rooms.

Externally, landscaping upgrades to the garden terrace and external stone paving blended soft landscaping with the home's classical aesthetic, creating a seamless transition between interior and garden. A full modernisation of the heating system, including boiler upgrades, was carried out alongside the refurbishment of the butler's pantry, utility areas and WC facilities throughout - each delivered to the same exacting standard as the principal reception rooms.

This project showcases Clarks Construction's capability in combining traditional craftsmanship with discreet modernisation, all while preserving the historical integrity of a distinguished country house - a home where every detail respects its heritage whilst delivering uncompromising contemporary luxury.
